An industry-leading initial assessment that pinpoints where a student is starting from and recommends the most suitable course, with tailored reporting and flexible permission controls accessible through teacher and organisational manager accounts.
Pass precisely identifies where each learner is starting from, ensuring they are set up with the strongest possible foundation for their learning journey.
Every course includes a subject knowledge assessment designed to highlight areas of strength and pinpoint where further development is needed.
We'll provide honest, informed guidance to help you find the course best suited to you and your learners' needs.
Subject knowledge assessments provide both learners and educators with a comprehensive understanding of where strengths and weaknesses sit across the course curriculum, ensuring that revision time is directed where it will have the greatest impact. By pinpointing specific areas of difficulty early on, learners can approach their studies with greater focus and purpose – significantly improving their chances of achieving success.
Without this insight, revision can quickly become scattered and inefficient. Subject knowledge assessments bring structure and clarity to the learning process, replacing guesswork with a clear, actionable path forward. They also equip teachers and training providers with the information they need to offer more personalised support, ensuring every learner receives guidance that is relevant, timely, and tailored to their individual needs.
The diagnostic tests combine to build a comprehensive picture of a learner’s Current Level – a measure of their overall attainment within the functional skills curriculum. Initially calculated from the initial assessment and continually refined as learners work through exercises on the functional skills student platform, the Current Level is driven by a sophisticated algorithm that factors in question difficulty and applies carefully weighted scores.
Rather than relying on a straightforward percentage, this method takes into account a learner’s ability to handle more demanding questions, while reducing the impact of gaps in more straightforward areas. The outcome is a far more accurate and balanced reflection of a learner’s true ability – ensuring they are matched to the right course and receive focused support precisely where it is needed.
What truly distinguishes the Pass approach is its capacity to identify high-ability learners who may still have notable gaps in their knowledge – a level of insight that no other assessment or diagnostic tool is currently able to provide.
The learner has limited existing knowledge and may encounter difficulties in certain areas of the course. Although progression to Level 1 could be considered in some cases, they are currently best placed at Entry Level.
The learner is well-placed to begin the Level 1 course, which will deepen their understanding of fundamental concepts and establish a strong foundation from which to progress to Level 2.
The learner is ready to embark on the Level 2 course, where they are likely to grow in confidence quickly and should be in a strong position to achieve their qualification within a reasonable timeframe.
The learner is in a strong position to sit their exam. They may find it beneficial to complete the Subject Knowledge Assessment to flag any Level 2 topics that could do with a final review, though this is by no means a requirement before taking the exam.
Pass gives learners access to TQUK’s past exam papers as part of its learning platform, allowing them to practise with the exact style and format of questions they’ll face in their real assessment. TQUK’s mock exams help to prepare students for their Functional Skills exams, so they can be as calm and confident as possible on exam day.
These past papers are woven into Pass’s wider assessment tools, so learners aren’t just completing papers in isolation but using them alongside progress tracking and personalised learning plans. This means tutors and learners can identify exactly which topics need more attention based on real exam performance, and target revision accordingly. By combining TQUK’s authentic exam content with Pass’s data-driven approach to learning, training providers can offer a more focused, efficient route to qualification success.
Ideal for learners who value flexibility and convenience, TQUK’s online remote invigilation option allows exams to be taken anytime and anywhere – with availability around the clock, seven days a week. Bookings can be made from as early as the next day, and with a more affordable price point, it is a great option for those looking for a cost-effective route to achieving their qualification.
The process is self-guided, with learners setting up independently through the exam software, making it a straightforward option for those comfortable with technology. Exams can be taken on a PC, laptop, or Chromebook, though it is worth noting that Macs are not currently supported. All footage is reviewed and marked by a human examiner, and with results returned in as little as 2–6 working days, learners won’t be left waiting long for their outcome.
Absolutely – Pass diagnostic assessments are completely free to use, with no limit on the number of learners. Whether you’re working with 10 learners or 1,000, the English and Maths diagnostic tests cost nothing. Pass is committed to making high-quality resources as accessible as possible, offering both free course options and free diagnostic tests to support every learner’s progress.
Pass offers two types of invigilation, online remote invigilation offered by TQUK and online human invigilation offered by Open Awards.
Pass works with OneFile, Hubspot, Open Awards as well as partnering with excellent apprenticeship training providers such as the NHS, Manchester City and Siemens. Find out more about our partnerships here.
The Pass initial assessment is exclusively available through Pass services. Keep an eye out for the ‘Powered by Pass‘ logo to ensure you’re accessing the genuine assessment.
Pass provides subject knowledge assessments that measure a learner’s understanding across each key area of the curriculum. By identifying specific gaps in knowledge, these assessments enable the creation of a personalised learning plan built around the individual needs of each learner. This targeted approach ensures that time and effort are directed towards the areas requiring the most attention, giving learners the best possible chance of making meaningful progress.
The decision on which course a learner is enrolled onto ultimately rests with the training provider or educator. The Pass initial assessment serves as a helpful guide throughout this process, but it is always the educator who has the final say on which course is most appropriate for their learner.
